Ascot’s Saturday card features the ultra-competitive Victoria Cup, an early season handicap over seven furlongs. One of the leading fancies is Newbury Spring Cup winner Haaf A Sixpence who battled on gamely to defeat a high class field. He has been raised 5lb by the handicapper for that victory which followed up an excellent second in a similar contest at Doncaster. His chance has to be respected.

Another impressive winner last time out was bonusseeker who had Cape Classic and Highland Colori behind her at Haydock. The four-year-old has been raised 6lb for that win but looked to be capable of further improvement. There appeared to be no excuses for those behind her and I expect the form to be confirmed. Glen Moss is another one to consider after a decent run at Kempton last time. He is trained by Charlie Hills who has taken over the reins from father Barry this season.

A regular competitor in these seven furlong handicaps is Kevin Ryan’s useful five-year-old Lightning Cloud. He is a course and distance winner and has established a fine partnership with jockey Amy Ryan. He made his seasonal reappearance at Thirsk last month and put in an eye-catching effort when making up late ground to finish third. That should have put him spot on for another tilt at this valuable prize having finished a close fifth 12 months ago.

The draw is always a factor in this race and it may pay to have one on each side with Lightning Cloud coming out of stall 22 and Tartiflette from stall 7.
