gabrial 300x225 photoSaturday’s feature race is the Doncaster Mile at 2.20. Although there are only seven runners, it looks a good quality renewal of this Listed event. The early favourite is Andrew Balding’s Highland Knight who won three races last year under jockey David Probert. Liam Keniry takes the ride this weekend and he may find himself forced to make the running. Highland Knight showed that he is a good front-runner when winning a valuable handicap at Epsom last season and he could take some pegging back.

Ralph Beckett’s Moonstone Magic won her first two races last season including the Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury. That form entitled her to run well in the 1000 Guineas but she ran no sort of race and has not been seen since. Richard Hannon’s Chandlery has an even longer absence to overcome having missed the whole of last season through injury. He won the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood as a two-year-old and Ryan Moore takes the ride.

Sovereign Debt is another who has been campaigned in the highest class and he last ran at Ascot behind Excelebration. He ran a good race when only beaten three lengths behind Ishvana in the Jersey Stakes at the Royal meeting and is ridden by Jamie Spencer. There is no stable in better form than that of Richard Fahey and that must bring Gabrial into contention here. He won a handicap impressively at Haydock last year before being upped in class. His fifth place at Royal Ascot behind Most Improved was a fine effort and it may be significant that Kieren Fallon has been booked to ride. He has shown a tendency to hang in his races and Fallon will be keen to hold him up off the pace. Providing he settles, his finishing burst could prove too much for this field and he looks a good bet at 5-1.
