Lockinge Stakes 300x168 photoLockinge Stakes 2013 Preview

The feature race at Newbury this weekend is the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes. The money suggests that Aidan O’Brien’s Declaration Of War is strongly fancied to win this. The colt was impressive when taking a Listed race at Leopardstown first time out and has been backed at all rates from 9-2 down to 2-1 favourite. Nonetheless, he still needs to show some improvement to justify those odds.

He is opposed by established group performers Cityscape and Farhh, the latter having chased home the great Frankel on two occasions last season. Roger Charlton’s Cityscape has shown his best form with some give in the ground and connections will be hoping that the going is on the soft side of good on Saturday. This is less of a concern for the versatile Farhh, although the suspicion remains that he is going to be at his best over further this season. He ran a storming race in the Eclipse last year and the Godolphin horses are yet to find top gear.

Sir Henry Cecil is represented by last year’s French 1000 Guineas winner Beauty Parlour who joined the Newmarket maestro last season. She can be forgiven a disappointing effort in the Falmouth Stakes in the Autumn and she could prove a threat to them all. Roger Varian’s Aljamaaheer is starting to look frustrating after some seemingly unlucky efforts. He is undoubtedly capable of winning a big prize and looks overpriced at 16-1.

Trumpet Major is also a top rate miler and Fencing could be a late improver for John Gosden. It may be worth taking a chance on Beauty Parlour at the available odds with an each-way interest on Aljamaaheer.
